The Beethoven School helps children learn at their own pace on Chicago's South Side. Kids reading 1-2 years behind grade level get intensive tutoring as alternative to being "held back". Andersonville, Chicago's Swedish community readies to welcome King Gustav and Queen Silvia, coming to help dedicate the Swedish-American museum. Exhibition of the works of contemporary Spanish art "Epoca Nueva" or "New Age" , representing the post-Franco freedom felt by Spanish artists. "Playboy of the West Indies",a Trinidadian writer's adaption of "playboy of the Western World" had its American Premier when featured as part of Chicago's International Theater Festival. Repeat of the story about the Hanover, Michigan Organ Museum. FLIP SIDE: INterview with 1940s dance performer Katherine Dunham, an African American celebrity known for lavish, vibrant sets and Caribbean rhythms. In later years, her dance and theater school students included Marlon Brando and James Dean. She perfomed in several films, also. Rebuilding the bridge between art & religion, Chicago's oldest Catholic Church, St. Pat's, sponsored an "Art of the Madonna" contest, an idea from writer Andrew Greeley, who put up half the prize money. REPEAT of "Nemico Mio" story. Art as a healing force: neurologists find how creative brains of artists may be different from those of the rest of us. This report is about art historians, art therapists, artists and scientists meeting in Chicago to explore this idea. |
